Geocoding consists of assigning geographic coordinates (longitude/latitude) to an address. This process leads to the implementation of automated processing on a one-off basis or on address files (individuals, companies, points of interest, etc.). The geographical coordinates make it possible to position each address on a digital map via a Geographic Information System (GIS). Geocoding is one of the techniques of geolocation or geo-referencing.
Geolocation or georeferencing is a technique that allows a person (or an object, etc.) to be positioned on a map or plan using their geographic coordinates.
The georeferencing operation is carried out using a terminal capable of being located via a satellite positioning system (a GPS receiver for example) and of publishing its geographical coordinates (latitude/longitude) in real time or delayed.
In marketing, for example, this method makes it possible to locate the receiver of an advertising message geographically, thanks to the Internet or a mobile phone.
Geomarketing includes all marketing actions based on the geography of populations and consumption. This approach is therefore based on the analysis of geographical, socio-behavioural and socio-demographic data (living locations, housing types, SPCs by neighbourhood, etc.).
In order to prepare for the dissemination of the 1999 population census, INSEE had developed a division of the territory into homogenous size grids called IRIS2000. This acronym stood for “Ilots Regrouped for Statistical Information” and referred to the target size of 2,000 inhabitants per elementary grid cell. Since then, IRIS (which now replaces IRIS2000) has become the basic building block for the dissemination of infra-municipal data. It must comply with geographical and demographic criteria and have unambiguously identifiable contours that are stable over time.
